SKATING
TERMS: BLOCKS--The markers used to set the course. HEAT BOX--Area designated at meets where the skaters gather just prior to their race to draw for lane positions and meet those that are racing against them. NOVICE DIVISION--Usually first year skaters that are not quite as fast as other skaters that have more experience. CLASS "A" DIVISION--Veteran skaters that have raced for at least a year. CLASS "B" DIVISION--Veteran skaters that are not able to keep up with the Class "A" skaters. SHORT TRACK--Indoor speedskating on a hockey size rink of 111 meters. LONG TRACK--Usually outdoor speedskating on a track that is at least 250 meters to 400 meters around. METRIC SPEEDSKATING--Usually 400 meter oval (3 hockey rinks laid end to end) with just two skaters on the track at one time skating for fastest time. |
